The Right Order to Paint a Room

If you are getting ready to paint a room, the order you paint each surface matters. The best results come from working from the top down so you protect freshly painted areas and get cleaner lines. At Jeff Bryant Painting, we follow a simple process that keeps the project neat and efficient.

Step 1: Start with Ceilings

Always begin by painting the ceiling. Ceiling paint can drip while you roll or spray, so doing it first prevents splatters on walls or trim that are already finished.

Painting the ceiling before the walls also makes it easier to get a straight, clean cut line later. It is much simpler to paint the wall up to the edge of a finished ceiling than trying to paint a ceiling edge above freshly painted walls.

Step 2: Paint the Trim Next

After the ceiling is done, move on to the trim. This includes baseboards, door casings, and window trim. Doors can be painted at the same time as trim because they typically use the same type of paint. It keeps the process efficient and helps everything dry in the right order.

Painting trim first also makes taping simpler. Tape sticks and comes off cleaner on trim paint than it does on freshly painted walls. And when you roll out the walls at the end, it helps protect the trim from splatter.

Step 3: Finish with Walls

Walls are the last step when you paint a room. Once the ceiling and trim are dry, you can cut your wall paint right up to those finished edges. This is what gives the room a clean, professional look.

What About Prep Work?

Before any paint goes up, we always handle the necessary prep such as patching, sanding, caulking, and spot priming. Good prep creates a smooth finish and helps the paint last longer.

Paint a Room the Right Way

Here is the correct order to paint a room:

  1. Ceilings
  2. Trim and doors
  3. Walls

Following this sequence keeps your new paint looking sharp and reduces the chance of touch-ups.
